Remembering Atta Mills

Beloved former President John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills became the first Ghanaian president to die in office on 24 July 2012. The nation mourned his passing with beautiful tributes such as this video by the Music Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) entitled ‘Yedi Areweho’/’We Are Mourning’

Mills’ Vice President, Mr. John Mahama, finished his term in office and ran on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party ticket in the December 2012 elections. The National People’s Party (NPP) strongly contested the results and an exhausting court case has continues to this day. Most people expect the verdict to be a rerun of the 2012 elections.

Political talk in Ghana can quickly get heated, but the anniversary of the leader’s death was as good a time as any to put partisanship aside and celebrate his memory. Many Ghanaians wore mourning clothes on the 24th and the news published biographies and tributes to the late president.

It is fitting that this would be the week I experience  both a high-profile birth and an intimate funeral, as Mills died only three days after his 68th birthday.
