My ideal return-to-the-US care package:
Coffee – start with a few pounds of a hearty, local medium blend. French pressed. If you can summon rain for that day as well, I’ll be entirely in your debt.
Ginger candies – because I’ll miss the high prevalence of ginger in everyday cooking
The West Wing, all 7 series on DVD – because sometimes you need a little Sorkinese in your life (and not The Newsroom)
Book shops – Capitol Hill Books, Powell’s, Strand, even just Barnes and Noble. I’ll take anything at this point that sells something other than Christian self-help.
Messenger bag – my trusty High Sierra backpack has served me well since 7th grade, but the frayed shoulder straps are threatening to give way any minute and I sorely miss having a messenger bag on hand.
Underwear – TMI? For the first time in my life I am looking forward to shopping for quality underwear. Cheap cotton is really difficult to hand-wash (sorry, Fruit of the Loom) and after 6 months here, I imagine most of what I brought will be stretched into unusability.
Tumble Dryer – I yield. I know air-drying is great for so many reasons, and I’m inclined to continue air-drying most of my clothes. But for those that just stretch more and more and more with each washing…let me zap them with heat in peace.
Pumpkin Beer – Of the Schlafly variety, if you please. And several cases’ worth. Make it snappy.
